The National Archives is a government authority which comes under the Ministry of Culture, headed by the Director General (National Archivist). The foundation of the mission is that, in accordance with Swedish law, most documents are available to the public.
What we do
Within the remit of the mission we have a national overview of the archive sector.
The National Archives collects, preserves, and gives access to archives as well as answering enquiries. We regulate and supervise the management of the archives of Sweden’s public authorities. Through guidance and cooperation we work to increase knowledge of information management. We also work to increase knowledge of the contents of the archives and their function in society. The National Archives encompass the state’s heraldic authority and has a scientific publication.
Our long term goals
- Secure long-term access to information of societal importance
