The Swedish National Archives is opening beta testing for a new way to work with our archives: an AI assistant connector (MCP server).
We've built a server based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) that connects AI assistants - such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Vibe - directly to our public APIs, open datasets, and digitised image collections. Once connected, a researcher can ask their AI assistant to search across our holdings and view images of archival documents, all without leaving the conversation.
This is aimed at researchers who spend real time in the archives: PhD students, master's students, and scholars in history and the humanities working with primary sources at scale. If you do genealogical or local-history research and are comfortable working with AI tools, we'd also welcome your feedback.
This is early-stage software. Expect some rough edges, and please tell us where they are - that's exactly what the beta is for!
